Who is the NEBOSH General Certificate course suitable for?
Relevant to every workplace, the NEBOSH National General Certificate is ideal if you are a manager or supervisor and have health and safety management responsibilities. We also recommend this course if you are embarking on a career in health and safety or wish to advance a career in the industry.
You will achieve the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety which is an SCQF Level 6 qualification (equivalent to RQF Level 3, similar to an A Level).
A comprehensive foundation course that will provide you with a good understanding of the principles and practice of managing risk in the workplace and the confidence to apply your knowledge.
Professional Recognition
NEBOSH qualifications are recognised by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
Earning a NEBOSH certification opens countless doors for professionals—not only do many job adverts specify NEBOSH qualifications, but National General Certificate holders also become eligible for membership of:
The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at associate (AIOSH) or Techincal (techIOSH) grade depending on work experience.

Course Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for this qualification; however, it is essential that learners have a suitable standard of English language to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus (see the full syllabus in the section below).
Course Information
The NEBOSH National General Certificate programme consists of 11 elements across two units:
- Element 1 Why we should manage workplace health and safety
- Element 2 How health and safety management systems work and what they look like.
- Element 3 Managing risk – understanding people and processes
- Element 4 Health and safety monitoring and measuring
- Element 5 Physical and psychological health
- Element 6 Musculoskeletal health
- Element 7 Chemical and biological agents
- Element 8 General workplace issues
- Element 9 Work equipment
- Element 10 Fire
- Element 11 Electricity
NG2 is assessed via a risk assessment project based on your workpalce. You can find more on the NG2 assessment here [link when done]
How is the Course Assessed?
The National General Certificate is assessed via an open book examination and practical risk assessment project.
Open Book Examination
Open book exams for the NEBOSH NG course are available monthly you can see dates here.
These are taken at home, work or wherever else works for you – over a 24-hour period.
The assessments are based around a scenario and you have access to all of your learning materials, notes and other resources such as the HSE website.

NG2 - Risk Assessment
The NG2 Risk Assessment Project is a risk assessment and management report completed in your workplace or another workplace you are familiar with.

How long does it take?
Well, this depends on the method of delivery and you, as a learner.
As a general rule, classroom learners tend to complete the course a little quicker than eLearners.
Mainly as it’s more regimented, with scheduled course days and assessments booked to follow the course. The table below shows the taught hours across NG1 and 2 with expected self-study hours.

This covers your first attempt at both NG1 (OBE) and NG2.
If you are refered for either assessment, additional NEBOSH assessment fees will be payable.

- NG1 – £89
- NG2 – £89
There is no VAT on assessment fees.
